When he was a young man at ages 13 and 16, this wannabe entrepreneur received news that would knock most people off their feet.

He had cancer and not just one type but two completely different types, which left him listening to his last rights and waiting to die.

He was given only fourteen days grace, but instead of passing on as expected he astounded the medical community when he survived both these brutal diseases and also  a medically-induced coma for a year.

This courage to beat the odds and take on a challenge that many deemed as impossible left him with the realisation that no challenge would ever be too great or any peak too high.

He proved this theory when he crested the peak of the highest point in the world (Mount Everest) with only partial use of his lungs.

As the first cancer survivor to do so, he then decided to continue climbing and has since topped the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, South America, Australia, Antarctica, and North America.

But this isn't a story about a man with super human strength or support, a solopreneur with the inside track to succcess.

This is a story of total belief in himself and what he can achieve.

Inspiring us all to dream bigger and go for the impossible.

Back in 1989, he has a phone call that changed his life.

He had been advised that his sister had been raped. What could he do to help? What could he do to support his sister?

Well for two years, he struggled to deal with the rape and the effect it had on his life – both as the brother of a rape victim and as a male.  He transferred colleges – so he could be close to home and his sister during the trial. 

And once back home with his family, he saw the pain, rage and sadness his parents, relatives, and family friends were also going through.  The sexual assault of his sister had changed many people’s lives.

And it was with this dawning realisation that an assault like this was as much based on lack of understanding of what is the correct way to conduct yourself with someone else, as it was a crime.

It was the worlds lack of understanding, or specific training in regards to the the personal right of personal standards that was the problem.

Could he change the mind-set of youngster, adults and anyone with a sexual urge to realise that there was a way of interacting with each other that wasn't happening.

And over ten years, he worked, talked, discussed, reviewed and developed training to teach the "Can I Kiss You" platform, where he uses humour to break down the barriers of this taboo subject.

And now he travels the world bringing his message to the world.

As he says ""I do feel the work is a calling. The traveling does not get tiring because I know I'm going somewhere to get the opportunity to open minds and inspire a new way of thinking.  I get the wonderful honor and opportunity to plant the seed for them to take care of and nourish."

Todays guest solopreneur is a man with a fascinating tale, of hardship, persecution, and a burning desire to create the best life he could hope for.

Raised in a small fishing village in Senegal, West Africa, as a child he endured abuse, profound humiliation and the breakup of his parents at the tender age of two

This is of course is not what any child hopes for, and he found it particularly hard to accept as he looked around at his friends who all seemed to have the family life that he would have wanted.

Then later at age five he was taken to live in a compound of more than 100 people, living in extreme close proximity to each other.

It was here where he quickly learned to defend himself, and to develop the inner power that he needed to flourish in this unstable environment, where so many people fought for survival on a daily basis.

It was a hard, brutal start to his life, but one that he wouldn't allow to determine his future.

He knew that he wanted a life in America, and so at the age of 21, with just a few belongs and a gallon of water, he left Senegal, and amazingly managed to walk across the Sahara desert by foot between Algeria and Libya in six arduous days.

He had his dream and he wouldn't give up on it.

Well he did it, and even now many years after setting foot on the continent he is pushing himself to greater and greater achievements.

He is the author of "No Excuses, how to pursue a better life and lift others for a better world", and his "Mile High Momentum" training platform, he is about as far away from his beginning as it possible.

But what was it about the American dream that filled him with such hope from his life in Africa?

And when he started that walk across the desert did he truly believe that he would be where he is today?

Our guest today lives his life by two rules.

And these are two rules that by and large most people will try to keep away from, and then they wonder why they haven’t got their dream life.

You can’t be afraid to take a risk.

As a young man, he didn't have the desire to be the solopreneur or entrepreneur that he is today. Instead he had a burning passion to become a professional paintballer, and upon getting his first gun from his parents set out to achieve his aim. 

And it seems that what he wants to do, he makes sure that he does its as within four years he had travelled the world shooting capsules of paint at people winning $300,000 dollars in the process.

Even gaining the top prize of $160,000 in just one weekend.

But at his core burned a question. A question that had occurred to him several years earlier, and had remain within him. Gnawing away.

He asked himself  “If people can come from nothing and create insane amounts of wealth in one lifetime, then shouldn’t someone like myself coming from a middle class family who has the support from their family and lives in “The Land of Opportunity” be able to easily do the same thing?”

Wow, for a fourteen year old kid that shows awareness beyond his years.

He realised at any early age that comfort creates mediocrity, and pain motives change.

And now after investing over $500,000 of his own money on self development, and spending time with the likes of Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield and even Arnold Schwarzenegger he is taking those personal skills and sharing them with the world with his Peak Performance Club.

But how does someone at the age of 14 start thinking in such an advanced way, especially when it appears he didn’t have anything to force him to think that way?

As a child he didn't really set the world alight whilst attending McKinley High School, a trade school in Buffalo.

He failed many of his classes, as well as not managing to make the grade at football, basketball or track & field teams either.

It was as if no matter what he tried to succeed at he just couldn't get it going.

His career was always going to be something distant to what he truly knew would make him happy.

But like so many people in life, who struggle to find their path, it wasn't until he transferred to a different location, in this case Bennett High School that he found that he was trying to achieve in areas that weren't naturally him.

He stumbled across something that

It was there where he found his passion for public speaking,  and used his silver tongue to wow his peer group, becoming Senior Class President.

And now he started to get going. He had found something that he could do better than most.

But its ok, to have a silver tongue, but how can you take this talent and use it for maximum effect and become a solopreneur that rocks the world?

Well, he realised that he would use it to help inspire individuals and organisations find their brilliance.

He would help the world tap into the talents that they were given at birth, and start shining brighter than they have ever done before.

Todays guest joining us on todays Steve Jobs inspired podcast is an astonishing lady who delivers, positivity and inspiration to the world everyday of her life.

Born with ocular albinism – a condition that has made her legally blind, she managed to hide the issues with her vision until well into her 20’s from her employers, friends and I guess the world.

More amazingly, is the fact that she had been legally blind since a child, but it wasn’t until she was 17 that she actually realised it fully too.

Her parents upon finding out their newborn daughter had been born with the condition decided that they wouldn’t tell her, as they believed that it would result in both her and others placing limits on what she could achieve in life.

And so she lived with the condition, for over ten years, as she graduated and joined an international consultancy firm.

But the time came when her eyes deteriorated so much, that she could no longer hide it anymore, and the time would come to change direction, and with that direction set out to change opinions across the world.

And I love this about her story, but the realisation of what she should do next in her life came on the top of an elephant whilst travelling 1,000 miles across the country raising funds for Sight Savers.

She decided that she would create the non profit organisation Kanchi, named after that very same elephant, that aims to change the attitudes and behaviours towards people with disability by working with business leaders, helping them to see these people as assets to be developed.

And now as her star continues to shine brighter and brighter she is highly sought after as an inspirational speaker the world over.

So how do you manage from the top of an elephant to see a path that is literally life changing and have the courage to tackle it head on?

Archive 185: Kris Harty: A Solopreneur Who Towers Over The World With Her Positivity

Todays guest solopreneur has a mantra in life, and one that has been tested time and time again.

“You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can always control how you respond to what happens to you.” 

But that's ok, if you have mental strength, but what if you are quote on quote a normal person who gets hit by things in life and allow them to rock them on your heels.

You savour the victim mentality and share the story of hardship and mental strife with friends and colleagues.

You go back to your home and play sad music, until you pull yourself together and go again.

Well over the last ten years, our guest has battled two bouts of chronic illness, a terrible injury that occurred to her daughter, black mold poisoning, financial devastation including the loss of a business and home, and if that isn't bad enough then she also had to deal with post traumatic stress disorder too.

That is at least one whammy every two years.

Todays guest is a man who seems to have an absolute passion for building stuff.

As he says "I have been writing and commercializing software since childhood. My goals are the same now as they were then: to solve difficult, practical problems with software"

With a talent for writing code for computer programmes, and an eye for potential start-ups he has had astonishing success.

Success that quite simply could leave him sitting on a island doing nothing for the rest of his life, due to the $700,000,000 Google paid him for the Cambridge, Mass-based ITA Software Inc.

But that is just a tiny part of what has made him who he is, as he has steadily worked on his life, his career, and projects since leaving University with a bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science.

Even before that he would grab every opportunity he could to develop his skills, and for five years between 1986 and 1991 in every school break he would work as a developer on Xenix and Mach operating systems, and then went on to co-found ITA Software in 1998.

For all you computer game lovers, also know that he was the first employee hired at the video game developer Naughty Dog, where he co-created the first two installments of the Crash Bandicoot games for PlayStation.

But for me, and this is what I want to touch on, as I like this fact very much, is he seems to have a completely opposing view to the overnight success, get rich quick practice that has taken control of the world over the last few decades.

He works slowly and steadily, building his work in almost secrecy until 100% comfortable to release to the world.

And now with his latest venture Inky, an email organising system gaining more and more interest he once again, is giving birth to something that the world is looking for, and will bring even more success.

So, are there similarities between building computer games, and business platforms?

And what does he see in the world today that he wishes that he could have built?

Todays guest is a lady who from an air conditioned hotel room in Nicaragua found her path to a future that delights her, inspires her and probably makes her struggle to keep the weight off too.

Whilst whiling away the days watching the Food Network on television, she came up with a plan that would combine her passion for foods with her delight in travel...she would become the Urban Grocer.

Traveling the world she would seek out the kind of exotic foods that each country produces and weave it into a spunky informative and fun tv programme.

But if you think that her history is one that is linked with the media and her delight in discovering and talking about amazing foods, then think again.

Way back in 2004, she worked in a restaurant in Boston prepping hot and cold first courses during and before service, but then amazingly left and became a script writer for the Russian Premier Mikhail Gorbachev.

Getting the idea?? This is one of those shows where the dots of her life are quite difficult to tie up, but it seems true to say that even as a small child, working away in her mothers kitchen, she learnt to appreciate the delights of what we can place on our dinner plates.

And that has carried throughout her adult life.

And now with her latest venture, Porter and Sail, she is combining her love of food, and travel, with her passion for helping the discerning travellers to find the best of what is out there.

Todays guest is a fantastic fella who I have wanted to have on the show right from the very first days of Join Up Dots.

But like all new things that you start, I felt I needed a platform and an exposure that was worth his time, as he has a fantastic story that so many of you will resonate with.

He is a chap who grew up in quite a working class part of the United Kingdom, known as Coventry, and was a self confessed sensitive child, who struggled with many parts of being a kid that so many people breeze through.

The transition to senior school was particularly difficult for him, and in an attempt to find some courage that he could take back into his school-life, he  commenced a martial arts course.

However, the positive idea to empower, unfortunately had quite the opposite effect, as one day the martial arts tutor abused him, and quite simply changed his life over night.

And from that point, his life spiralled into a world of violence and anger.

And for over a decade he built a life based around the punishment he could dish out particularly around his job as a nightclub bouncer.

But then his life changed again, and he realised that he had to take control, and reclaim his own personal power.

And with the publication of his first book detailing this part of his life, he moved into a world of creating, positive reinforcement and inspiring the world to take control of their lives.

He has since written forty books (published in 21 languages), five multi-award-winning films, three stage plays (he was invited into the prestigious Royal Court writers Group) and hundreds of articles, many published in national magazines and broadsheets, and his autobiography ‘Watch My Back‘ has been adapted into a major motion picture Clubbed.

So does he think that he would have become so successful in this arena, if he didn't have something to fight against?

Todays guest is a man who seems to be born to be an entreprenenur.

Hell, he was born to be a solopreneur, entrepreneur and any name that you can attach to a go getter.

Pure hustle muscle, flexing at its best is what he is about, mixed in with a huge amount of wanting to enjoy what he does.

And it seems to me that he managed to do just that too.

From starting in quite humble beginnings selling bed linen at Macey's, he blossomed quickly to selling Popcorn from a stall in a shopping mall, and then working for some of the biggest most famous companies in the world.

And with a resume listing Microsoft and Facebook as companies that saw the drive that he had, and the ability to work tirelessly in a chaotic environment, the sky should have been the limit for him but life had other ideas.

When he was 24, he was hired as Facebook's 30th employee.

He joined the company when it was one year old; it had a few million users and was getting 50,000 new signups per day, and upon being offered employment he was given two salary options : He selected the one he wanted, and the stock options would have made him worth about $185 million today, however that was irrelevant as nine months later he was fired.

Amazingly it was originally created in one weekend using an outsourced team in Pakistan for $60.

He hustled and bootstrapped the company, eventually accepting limited outside funding, including a "staggering" $20.47 from his mother, Debra

So what made him realise that this was the thing that he should focus on?

But why was it that until quite recently, she hadn't followed the path that was true to her.

Todays guest calls herself "A mom with a towel"

She doesn't consider herself a celebrity, she isn't a millionaire, but she is someone who had a thought, transferred that thought into action, and created a business that is growing year on year.

A few years back she had an idea for a towel with a difference.

Such a different in fact that she was featured on ABC’s Emmy nominated reality show, Shark Tank, the US equivalent of our UK based version Dragons Den.

Todays guest is someone that from the very beginning of launching the Join Up Dots series has been my target guest.

A listener who from listening to the shows, and taking a huge amount of action in a very short time, has started on the road to success and living the dream life they crave.

We all hear the stories, and tales of the successful in life who overcome so much and come out at the other end living the dream, but how powerful is it to hear about someone who is just a few steps along the path from us.

The kind of person who might yet to have transitioned from the 9-5, but now has a firm idea of what they want and what they need to do to achieve it.

And our guest today is certainly that kind of person.

He contacted me at first by email, due to the content that he had heard on episode 70, and asked to have a chat, which I of course was grateful to do. And not for one minute do I think that I was the catalyst for where he is today, but it meant that he took action.

And that was just the start, and now from his hometown of Milton Keynes in the United Kingdom, he is just about to launch his first Music Seminar on the 8th of November 2014, which he hopes will be a day that will inspire, expand minds and show that you don’t have to be stuck in a rut with music production.

The line up of speakers are some of the most innovative experts in production and the music business, and all attendees will have a whole day to absorb their knowledge, learn new skills, participate in Q & A sessions, and learn the methods to work efficiently and get their art noticed.

Today's guest is a man who seems a person born to be an entrepreneur, although like many of us he forgot this was the case, and meandered without direction for quite awhile.

As a young boy of nine, he became fascinated by the worldwide web and the possibilities that it offered.

He was stimulated by the constantly changing online landscape, and so went into business creating his first website "Powerdunk"

He had taken entreprenurial action and dived headfirst into the online world.

However he didn't then become a CEO of his own company, hiring and firing adults, webdevelopers and other employees with abandon.

Instead he quickly forgot his blossoming business, and became what we would say "A normal kid".

Fun and mischief was the order of the day, and would have continued if his parents hadn't insisted that he entered the family business to earn a dollar or two, and this parental push turned out to be the making of him.

He learnt so many things, such as sales, invoicing, marketing to name just a few whilst working for his parents, it was a masterclass in entrepreneurial ventures.

But the most important lesson, was not something taught, but something that he discovered deep within himself.

He hated being an employee and working for someone else.

And that realisation took him back to his nine year old self, and the entrepreneur that he was born to be resurfaced and he has never looked back.

And now after creating and selling businesses, and coaching others as to the steps it takes to win online, he has found his true path in life.

His music career was no more.

As he explains, everyone has some rich habits and some poverty habits. "The key is to get more than 50% to be rich habits," he says.

Todays guest is the author of the amazing new book "21 Ways to Invite Excellence into Your Life." Growing up in a farming family, she spent many hours shooting, hunting, riding motorcycles, and of course riding on horses and loved the freedom the outdoors.

It was a carefree existence, that fitted perfectly with our outgoing personality.But unfortunately all of her childhood was not so carefree, as she experienced a series of traumatic experiences capped by her mom’s diagnosis with breast cancer.

When he hit the age of 27, he knew that he had to take action in his life.

He was fat, broke and miserable and living a life that was far from what he wanted it to be.

So he started working twice as hard on a real estate business that would net him a nice amount of passive income each month.

Not life changing as such, but still more than enough to start focusing on his next dreams.

And that is where it all went wrong, as after a years hard work, and almost touching dream of the monthly income, he received a message saying that he had defaulted on his mortgage and everything went south.

Todays guest is another example of someone who seems to have been born with the skills to make their own money.

At a very early age, whilst his friends were going the normal route to get jobs, by creating resumes and attending interview after interview he had other ideas.

He realised that the only person who is going to get wealthy in that scenario would be the employer not the employee.

So he set on of an entrepreneurial path to start making his own money, and at quite an early age too.

At the age of 11, you could find him selling his personal snacks at scout camp and by age 17 he had hired his friends to help him operate his landscaping business that earned him $10,000 for college.

All in all, by age 20 he started and ran over $320,000 in businesses.

But that was just the start of it all as he realised that the skills that he had built up were transferable and most importantly teachable.

So he began teaching other college students to run their own successful businesses, which led him to receive the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award from Young Entrepreneurs Across America.

 He now speaks to students across the country teaching them the lessons he's learned as a young entrepreneur and encouraging them to take the entrepreneurial leap.

So how has he managed to take the leap of faith that for many seems too big to handle?

When I was 14 and working on my first book I asked Donald Trump if he’d answer some questions about entrepreneurship. He said “Yes.”

Like anyone else, I’ve heard my share of “No’s,” too. “No” is a part of life and certainly a part of business but I try not to take rejection personally. Hearing “No” motivates me to try harder next time."

So at the age of 32, he revaluated his life goals and came up with a question to ponder.

Did he want to slave away at a mildly stimulating profession so he could perch atop a pile of assets at the ripe age of 65?

And after asking himself that question he knew it was time to leap into the unknown.

So in March of 2010, with no backup plan or prospect of gainful employment, he quit his job to pursue his lifelong dream: ultimate freedom.

How exciting is that?
